Diary: About the Czech Republic
As the first subject of his diary Petr has selected the Czech Republic. He would like to introduce the country to you where he was born. Perhaps you know already that his surname "Čech" means "Czech" in translation.
Perhaps you know already that my surname "Čech" means "Czech" in translation. So that my situation is approximately the same as that of our doctor in Chelsea whose name is Bryan English... However, I do not feel like a Czech only thanks to the surname, I am proud to be Czech and it has always been my dream to play for the national team. Every time, it is an honour for me when I am calling to the Czech squad.
I think that the Czech Republic has a lot to offer and show to foreign tourists. We have Prague that belongs among the most beautiful cities of Europe, and a lot of other historic monuments are also outside the capital. In the whole country you may find chateaus, castles, churches or monasteries that are worth visiting. I also like the fact that we have a very diverse countryside – forests, lakes, mountains and lowlands.
Despite the fact that as to area we are a smaller state, I think that a lot is heard about us in the world. Almost everybody knows the Czech beer, our product number one, we have very attractive models who manage to assert abroad and also our sportsmen are very successful and popular. Not only the football players, but also ice-hockey players, tennis players, athletes, skiers and other competitors who gain medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships. And as the nation we are also quite sportswards based. Many people in our country go in for sports activities, in the leisure time they ski, run, ride bicycles, go down the rivers in a canoe or go for hiking in the mountains.
In the end I would like to say that I regard highly the fact that my country is a part of the European Union and I consider it a large opportunity, especially, for young Czech people. I am glad that we are no more separated from the western part of Europe by any iron curtain, I am glad that we may come here freely, work here and live here. I myself am an example of it...
